About Scrolly Science
Scrolly Science is the specialist science-communication brand of Animara Studios Ltd. We work with researchers and clinicians to turn complex science into clear visual communication, from short explainers through to detailed anatomical and procedural animation.
Brief
What We Heard
You initially considered a seven-to-ten-minute film for general ophthalmologists. Following our discussion, you suggested a shorter film introducing ELDR to patients instead.
Story
The Work
For patients with a blocked or narrowed tear duct, DCR is a well-established surgical treatment that creates a new drainage route. Dacryoendoscopy offers a different way to investigate the lacrimal passage directly and, in suitable cases, to consider treatment through the existing duct. Our film would explain these approaches clearly without suggesting that one treatment is appropriate for every patient.
The duct lumen remnant is the centrepiece of the story. Showing how the endoscope follows this remaining channel would give patients the anatomical context that is often missing from raw endoscopic footage. The aim is not to make a clinical decision for the viewer โ it is to help patients understand the options and have a better-informed conversation with their treating specialist.
Publication references and any permissions needed for on-screen use will be checked before the final film is approved.
Two-minute direction
The Script
An initial two-minute script direction for a patient audience. Intended to start the discussion, not to pre-empt your clinical review.
First draft, open to refinement together. ELDR is written here as you use it, and we'll confirm the exact wording and the closing call to action with you.
Timing
Visual
Voiceover
A person dabbing a constantly watering eye through an ordinary day. Quiet frustration, not drama.
A blocked tear duct is a small problem that never feels small. It waters, it blurs, and for many people it simply doesn't go away.
A simple 2D view of the standard operation: a new drainage route created around the blockage.
The usual fix is an operation called DCR. It works by building a new pathway for tears. For a long time, it's been the main option most patients are offered.
Transition into a cleaner, more clinical 2D anatomy of the tear drainage system coming into view.
But there's another way to look at the problem. Instead of going around the blockage, we can look inside the duct itself.
The immersive 3D-look sequence. A tiny endoscope enters the duct and follows the duct lumen remnant through the passage.
A fine endoscope travels into the tear duct and follows a natural channel, the duct lumen remnant, that can guide the way through. This is dacryoendoscopy.
Back to warm 2D. The same person from the opening, this time at ease.
Following that channel can make a less invasive treatment possible, working through the body's own pathways rather than creating new ones.
The eye, clear and calm. A simple line of text and the clinic's name.
It's called ELDR, and it isn't offered everywhere yet. If a watering eye is affecting your life, it's worth asking whether it could be an option for you.
Look and feel
Visual Direction
We recommend a hybrid visual treatment that reserves the most immersive detail for the key anatomical moment. The mockup illustrates the intended contrast; it is not a finished production frame.
Option 1 ยท Smart Hybrid Motion
Recommended
Smart Motion Graphics for the patient story and clear anatomical explanations, then a focused immersive 3D-look sequence as the endoscope follows the duct lumen remnant โ with Sam overseeing scientific and visual accuracy.
Option 2 ยท Extended bespoke 3D
Future option
A fully bespoke 3D production could provide more detailed modelling across the duct and endoscopy sequences. Larger budget and longer production โ treated as a separate future option.
Deliverables
What We Will Build
One patient-facing film of around two minutes, produced using Smart Hybrid Motion.
Patient-facing film
Around two minutes
In English โ our recommended length for holding a patient audience.
Smart Hybrid Motion
2D + 3D-look hero
Polished 2D for story and anatomy, with an immersive 3D-look sequence for the duct lumen remnant.
Script development
Light client time
We draft it, refine it with you, and keep your time commitment to a few hours across the whole project.
Optional promotion
100k+ impressions
Optional social promotion with an impact report afterwards. The film remains entirely yours.
Delivery package
Master + social cuts
A master file plus versions sized for your website and social media.
Storyboard sign-off
Before animation
A storyboard for your review and sign-off before any animation begins.
Process
How We Work
Four stages, each with a clear review point, led directly by Dr Sam Crossley.
Script
01
We agree the argument, the length and the call to action, and write a script built around your work. You review and approve it before anything moves on.
Storyboard
02
We map the film scene by scene โ and the hero sequence in particular โ before production starts. Changes are easy and cheap at this stage.
Production
03
We produce the animation, with the 3D-look duct sequence under Sam's scientific direction. Roughly two to three weeks once the script is agreed.
Delivery
04
We deliver the master and formats for website and social. Optional promotion includes launch support and reporting. Calls are on Microsoft Teams.
Opportunity
Why Now
There may be no fixed deadline, but there is a real opportunity to make a difference now.
